My mother always told me that I should speak with a king in a kings manour and a farmer in a farmes manour
because there are always differences in how complicated or profession specific their language is. Just to be clear,
it has nothing to do with treating people different, its only what vocabulary I use when speaking to different people in
my work.
Throughout the years I have seen how good this makes a consultant looks towards customers or suppliers if he
can level with them. I have experienced customers saying "Its so easy to speak to you about IT systems because
you say it in a way we actually understand" which is always the goal when speaking about things I do.
But! Why are there so many, not only but its the profession I'm in, consultants that refuse to level or where
the levelling is none existing?
I would say it comes from the culture where you're brought up, but it should also be important in the educations
throughout the different universitys that persons that are going to have contact with someone should learn this
important thing called levelling. Teachers, parents and professionals that know how this is done, be honest to
students, sons, daughters and colleagues and give them pointers. If everyone could level, Im sure there would
be less misunderstandings and confused people out there
So how is this done?
A couple of reminders:
- Learn who your customer are, what they do and what vocabulary they use
- Practice on friends and family to explain the things you work with
- Ask your customers for feedback after you have explained things to them and see how well you made it
And to you that refuse to learn or change, think again, your environment will like you even more if you level with them
