Incorporating social in organizations workspace

by Mr Per Olsson 12. November 2009 21:24

Every expert on new media (I call it that but social media is also a word for it) says "you must use social media or else..." or "social media is so good at...at...erh...chat?"
the second example was to emphasize how dangerously quickly people amend new technologies or techniques but they actually have no clue what its good for but everyone is speaking about it so it must be good and I and you and everyone else must use it.

The problem with new channels or media in organizations (I think of the ones that has owners that want to make money) that it cost resources that needs to be calculated with in the process of incorporating it in the workspace?

I havent heard any Social media entrepreneur or New media evangelist that says "Use this, but remember that it will cost resources of some kind in the beginning" and I understand all the positive effects of being out there in new channels and learning new things, getting new perspectives and ideas, but there is negative parts as well.
I see three big issues with implementing social in an organization

  • it costs resources that needs to be taken from something else
  • stress can occurr if this is handled incorrect by the persons involved
  • Its hard to know which new media/channel the bet should be placed on since new appear and old disappear

If there is good solutions or arguments to this there will be no problem to spread all new tools even to the most industrial old school organisations but remember that  there is actually people thinking of the economical aspects and consequences.
